Bio

Researcher, Educator, Supervisor, Leader

I'm Megan (she/her), a 3rd year PhD student in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). I am a National Certified Counselor and a Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern in the state of Florida. My master's degree is in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Florida and I have a bachelor of science degree in Psychology from SUNY Cortland in Cortland, NY.

Before pursuing doctoral studies in Counselor Education, I was a mental health counselor at a psychosocial rehabilitation intensive outpatient program for clients with severe mental illness. I was also a Relationship Educator at Project Harmony at the Marriage and Family Research Institute at UCF, where I taught couples and individuals healthy relationship skills.
I am a passionate student, educator, and researcher aiming to strengthen counseling outcomes for clients and improve the quality of life for the professionals who serve them.

Research Interests

My research interests include:
  • Empathy fatigue in professional counselors
  • Crisis self-efficacy in counselors-in-training
  • Counselor wellness
  • Mindfulness
  • Counseling clients with severe and persistent mental illness
My mission as a researcher is to promote sustainability and longevity of the counseling profession and strengthen meaningful client outcomes through crisis competency development, preventing counselor impairment, and fostering organizational support.
I strongly identify as a counseling researcher. I have studied COVID-related mindfulness and depression in counselor trainees and am currently examining factors that relate to trainees' crisis self-efficacy. I'm also passionate about preventing and treating empathy fatigue in professional counselors, from an organizational perspective. Clinicians in our field provide critical mental health services to clients and communities, and deserve to pour into their wellness as much as they pour into their clients. My dream is to train counseling organizations and agencies on how to prevent counselor empathy fatigue, and keep our counselors thriving!

In my role as a doctoral student, I serve as a clinical supervisor for Advanced Practicum and Internship master's students, teach a course on stress management for undergraduates, and have served as a graduate assistant and group practicum facilitator for faculty teaching courses including couples counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, substance abuse counseling, crisis, disaster, and trauma, group counseling, helping skills, and  counseling diverse populations.

In my free time, I love playing card and board games, watching Netflix series, reading fiction, spending time with my partner, family, and friends, and finding the best cold brew at local coffee shops. Thanks so much for stopping by. Want to connect? Feel free to reach out at [email protected].
